Starting Out

To begin with I had a look at PBWorks. This website seemed to offer all you could want from a VLE. Easy to edit pages, sub-pages even the ability to organise the pages into folders for easy access. However it also came with a number of flaws. The layout and general 'look' of the site was like turning the clock back to 1999. The colour pallet was also unbearable, ranging from snot green to fluorescent orange the 8 or so theme colours available to free users were enough to make a priest curse. Finally, and probably most significantly, there was a little bar at the top of the screen illustrating how much space was left in the free user memory banks. Having uploaded one page I was told that I had around 2GB of space left to create my whole VLE. No thank you..
Brighter Climates
The next website I used was the far less garish Google Sites. This website offered a variety of templates to choose from and also allowed users full customisation of every text colour or background. This proved a wondrous change from the aforementioned cow pat of a colour pallet available on PBWorks. Some of the issues I had with this site however originated in the coding of the site itself. Changing the colour of the text would work but only on occasion and I found particular trouble with altering the link colour. The final straw for me came with my frustration at trying to embed a quiz into the site. I spent the best part of two hours creating and editing quizzes on three different sites only for the embedded quiz to not appear.
The Final Choice?

The last page I looked at was Wikispaces. Again (a running theme apparently) this site looked to have all of my features available. However, once again my chosen quiz would not embed properly and the thought of formatting and populating another VLE after I had completed half the work already on Google Sites.
Therefore.....
